- What it covers: every Premier League club to reach the UEFA Champions League, from 1992-93 to 2025-26, how often each one made it, and the seven that went on to win it.
- Scope: qualification only (earned via league finishing position and cup routes), not match-by-match Champions League results. Premier League era only; the pre-1992 European Cup is not included.
- Data sources: a single compiled dataset built from public records (PremierLeague_Europe_1992-2026.xlsx), with Wikipedia used to confirm the 2025-26 season.
- Tools: Tableau 2025.1, published to Tableau Public. Excel for the data table.

Project Motivation
I’m a lifelong sports fan whose first love is football, and above all the English Premier League. That fandom is lived, not just watched. I’ve attended Premier League matches in England and followed the Champions League across Europe in the bars and pubs where it’s really felt, including a decisive night in Paris during the 2024-25 campaign, watching the home side win a must-win final league-phase match to reach the knockouts, on their way to lifting the trophy. Beyond the results, I’m drawn to what the Champions League means: its history and cultural weight in Europe and across the wider sports world. This project began as a broader Premier League dashboard. While building it, the question of how English clubs fare in qualifying for, and ultimately winning, Europe’s biggest prize proved rich enough to justify its own dedicated Champions League dashboard.
How This Dashboard Was Built
The data was compiled by hand in Excel, one row per club per season, with binary flags for qualification. From there the analysis is driven by calculated fields in Tableau: a Season Index, a running consecutive-run and longest-streak table calculation to measure how long each club held its place, and CASE-based logic to pre-compute each club’s streak start and length so the timeline could be drawn as a single bar per club. A manually added Champions League Winner flag marks the seasons that ended with an English club lifting the trophy. The trickiest part was the cases where ‘qualified’ did not match a club’s league position: Liverpool finished fifth in 2004-05 and Chelsea sixth in 2011-12, yet both entered the following season’s competition as holders, alongside other cup and Europa League routes into qualification.

- Three linked views: a qualification matrix (club by year), a longest-streak timeline (Gantt), and a most-qualifications ranking (bar).
- Click-to-filter: selecting any club filters all three views at once.
- Team-colored marks throughout, with trophy icons on the seasons that ended in a Champions League title.
- Layouts: a fixed 1600x1000 desktop layout plus a dedicated phone layout.
- How to read it: the matrix shows which club qualified in which season, the timeline shows each club’s longest unbroken run of qualifications, and the ranking shows career totals. Trophy icons mark the seasons that ended in a Champions League title.

Frequently Asked Questions
What years does the dashboard cover?
All 34 Premier League seasons, from 1992-93 through 2025-26. The European Cup became the Champions League in 1992-93, so the dashboard’s start lines up with the modern competition and the start of the Premier League.
Does it count English titles won before the Premier League era?
No. The dataset begins in 1992-93, so European Cup titles won earlier by Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Manchester United are not included. The seven-title figure shown is Premier League era only; English clubs’ true historic tally is higher.
Where does the data come from?
A single dataset compiled from public records of Premier League final standings and European qualification, with Wikipedia used to confirm the most recent 2025-26 season.
What does ‘qualified’ mean, and why do a few clubs appear without finishing in a Champions League position?
‘Qualified’ means a club earned entry for the following season, whether through its league finish or a cup or Europa League route. A few clubs qualified despite finishing outside the usual places: Liverpool in 2004-05 and Chelsea in 2011-12 both entered as reigning champions.
How can different seasons be compared when the format kept changing?
Carefully, and that is part of the story. England’s number of places grew over time, from one to four, and to five for 2026-27, and the competition itself expanded from a 32-team group stage to the 36-team league phase introduced in 2024-25. ‘Qualified’ therefore means something a little different from one era to the next.
